There are lots of applications for the point of this post, which is that "critical thinking" without facts is merely propaganda.
In the LDS context, discussing the Origin of the Book of Mormon (translation) without quoting the facts of what Joseph and Oliver, or discussing the setting of the Book of Mormon without mentioning what Joseph and Oliver said, is also propaganda.
Parents:
Any 'educator' who claims that 'teaching critical thinking' is more important than 'rote memorization of facts' shouldn't be allowed anywhere near your kids.
Young people can't do critical thinking about the world if they don't have an accurate mental model of the world, based on learning & remembering facts about the world.
What these 'educators' really mean by 'teaching critical thinking' is 'injecting our favored ideological indoctrination into your kids' brains -- including being 'critical' about every aspect of Western civilization that Leftist activists despise -- without knowing any of the facts about the world that would raise awkward questions about what we're injecting, and why we're injecting it.'
